Seven Countries Join the Belt and Road International Cooperation Mechanism for Disaster Prevention and Emergency Management
The 2025 Council Meeting of the Belt and Road International Cooperation Mechanism for Disaster Prevention and Emergency Management was held on November 6 in Sanya, Hainan. At this meeting, Tonga, Zimbabwe, Georgia, Malawi, Gambia, Comoros, and Honduras were admitted as member countries to the cooperation mechanism.
It is reported that two international organizations, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, joined the cooperation mechanism as partners. Under the mechanism, the Belt and Road Enterprises Sustainable Development Center and the Belt and Road Mining Standards Internationalization Working Group have been established.
Wang Xiangxi, Chairman of the Council of the Belt and Road International Cooperation Mechanism for Disaster Prevention and Emergency Management and Minister of China’s Ministry of Emergency Management, stated that since the formal establishment of the mechanism, China has actively played a leading role in promoting its organizational framework, implementing 14 cooperative initiatives, and continuously deepening multilateral and bilateral exchanges, achieving positive results.
"China's achievements in disaster prevention and management are substantial, benefiting not only its own people but also making important contributions to global sustainable development that are recognized by the international community," said Kamal Kishore, Assistant Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Since its formal establishment, the Belt and Road International Cooperation Mechanism for Disaster Prevention and Emergency Management has seen 34 countries and three international organizations become members or partners, with cooperation outcomes benefiting over 80 countries across five continents.
